You're Not Crazy, You Live In a Society
'Mental Illness' & The Logic of Capital
By Average Joey
This zine frames “mental” health in the context of a capitalist society. I argue that what is deemed "crazy" is shaped by the norms of any given social arrangement. Pushing back against the narratives of individual pathology and biomedical explanations for psychological and emotional distress, this zine makes the case that existential sadness and anxiety are healthy, natural responses given the social conditions people are subjected to. I conclude that discourse around psycho-emotional distress must confront the systemic causes of that distress.
