The Body Is Not an Apology Reading Group

Every first, second, third and fourth Wednesday from February 2022 until March 2022

*The final session for this reading group has been postponed to Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022. There will be no meeting on Wednesday, March 16th.

A five week virtual reading group series exploring The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor, an offering of radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by violent systems. Taylor proposes that in order to embody and thus practice radical self-love, we need to change the political economic and social system, so that it is one that reflects all of our inherent value, no matter what body it is that we arrived on the planet in.

Join us over the course of five weeks as we pull back the veils and thresholds that systems enclose us in, taking one step closer to reimagining body liberation. For those interested in attending, there is no need to have read the book to join for the introductory meeting on Wednesday, February 16th!

This series will be facilitated by Spike (she/they), a Black trans storyteller residing on Cherokee territory in Western NC. They believe in a reimagined world where the landscape is abolition-centered and spaces are grounded in deep, enriched community care. An avid orange-lover and body movement-encourager, Spike is continually in pursuit of honoring and celebrating our full, embodied messy selves. Portrait of Spike courtesy of Brandon McClain.

Live captioning will be available each session. Spanish interpretation is available upon request.

While Spike will draw supplemental material from Your Body Is Not an Apology Workbook, it is not mandatory to purchase for participation in this reading group.
