We Were Migrants
Professor Melissa Birkhofer will present We Were Migrants, a trilingual exhibit (Tsotsil, Spanish, English) which includes photo-essays that recount the experiences of indigenous migrants from Chiapas who went to the United States and returned to Mexico
Within these stories one will see the various lives that are lived in Southern Mexico. While this includes immigration stories to America, not all of the persons featured decided to make that journey and none of them stayed within the US. Rather than an immigration story these are stories of what it is like to be a modern-day Mayan in a world that thinks the Mayan community is something of the past. This event allows one to see outside of their personal sphere and into the lives of others more like them than one seems to believe.
