The Real Cost of Free Trade in Colombia
Witness for Peace Southeast is proud to present Anibal Perez as our speaker for the 2013 Speakers Tour! Perez is a striking example of the courage and determination that many Colombians possess as they fight for the right to live peaceably on their land, free from economic, political, and environmental violence.
Perez is the president of ASOTREPD Puerto, the Association of ex-Drummond port employees who became sick while working at Drummond. Drummond is an Alabama based company that operates a coal mine in Northern Alabama. Perez is credited with making public a recent Drummond coal spill by sending photos of the sinking barge to media outlets. It was not until after those photos appeared publicly that Drummond filed a report about the spill.
Perez then aided with the environmental investigation into Drummond. This led to death threats targeting him and his family. Though this was just the latest in a string of threats in recent years, he has yet to be granted security protection measures by the Colombian State.
Anibal hopes to share his story with people living in the U.S. so that we can discuss ways to work across borders for peace and justice. Join us on November 9th to hear Anibal's powerful story in person!
