Odyssey Middle's Poetry & Flash Fiction Reading
Over the course of the fall semester, 6-8th grade students (ages 10-13), experimented with fiction and poetry through collaborative challenges, studies of master writers (including the likes of E.E. Cummings, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Pavel Chekov), and experimentation such as Oulipo treatments, mimesis, and narrative pacing. Students selected their own themes (time, thoughts walking down a dark alley alone, and answers to unasked questions, to name a few) and generated 8-10 drafts. Then they moved through the publishing process with editor, agent, and illustrator interviews - exchanging roles to help each other revise, improve, and polish one final draft - to be read during the event!
Each student will read one piece, students will introduce each other with an Author's Statement written by their agent (another student in their group), and while each student reads, we would like to project (can bring our own projector) their illustration "cover." We would like one microphone and can bring a podium-stand if necessary (for them to read from).
