By Asako Yuzuki

Loved by our collective!

A novel inspired by a real-life woman who allegedly seduced and killed three men, captivating the public for being "fat and ugly." While being a page-turner suspense for the (sometimes almost a little sapphic?) tension between the prisoner and a woman reporter pursuing the case, Yuzuki magically also explores the expectations of “how women should live,” forced upon and internalized by women in Japan, with an imagination of how to break out of it.

*The complete absence of thoughts on the impact on animals from the food the characters thoughtfully prepare and enjoy was intriguing. While the novel explores feminism, the protagonist is not phased to know that "female cows are kept pregnant at all times to produce milk." Maybe it is revealing how consideration for animals are still simply out of sight in certain ways people see and depict the world.
