Strange Matters (Issue 3)
Spring 2024
Strange Matters is a magazine of new and unconventional thinking covering a wide range of subjects. It publishes regularly in print and digital formats, and also publishes new digital content on a rolling basis.
Issue Three of Strange Matters is chock-full of amazing work by a diverse and interdisciplinary crew of writers spread across the world. Without having set out to, they've just dropped what almost amounts to the Tech Issue, featuring: a philosophical editorial that explores the history and problems of technology under capitalism, a peek into the squabbles of the fascist "thought leaders" funded by the lords of Silicon Valley, the sad tale of how venture capital devoured the blockchain socialists, a manifesto for looking at the global economy through a socio-material lens, how the face of an unknown drowned girl shaped modernist art and the science of resuscitation, and even some poems in the voice of ChatGPT. But don't be deceived: in Issue Three you can also read about how communists should destroy the art market to set artists free, a short story about a South Carolina woman left behind alongside the rest of her exurban community, and the definitive spoof of the trend in book titles you never knew you hated until now. This little magazine has an enormous range. And they work hard to stick to their values: they're run democratically as a worker cooperative, and they're dedicated to paying writers above market-rate for magazines of this size.
