What does it take to keep fascists and white nationalist organizations out of our communities? Co-authors Mic Crenshaw and Moe Bowstern share the oral history of successful anti-racist organizing in Portland, reflect on the hard-won lessons from the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s and 90s.

It Did Happen Here: An Antifascist People's History compiles interviews with dozens of people who worked together during the waning decades of the twentieth century to reveal an inspiring collaboration between groups of immigrants, civil rights activists, militant youth, and queer organizers. This oral history focuses on participants in three core groups: the Portland chapters of Anti-Racist Action and Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice, and the Coalition for Human Dignity.

Mic Crenshaw is an independent Hip Hop artist, respected emcee, poet, educator and activist. Crenshaw is the Lead U.S. Organizer for the African HipHop Caravan and uses Cultural Activism as a means to develop international solidarity related to Human Rights and Justice through Hip Hop and Popular Education. in his teenage years, Crenshaw actively confronted white supremacist gangs that were a growing part of the hard-core music scene. Mic eventually moved to Portland, where he quickly became one of the most respected artists in the Northwest, and his community efforts have had both local and international impact. Crenshaw is a co producer of the It Did Happen Here podcast.

Moe Bowstern contributes to underground literary cultural traditions as a reader, writer, and editor, best known for the commercial fishing zine Xtra Tuf, which shares her life in the Alaska salmon, halibut, herring, cod, and crab fisheries. After moving to Portland, from 1997 to 2007 Moe gave her time to DIY social practice projects, co-creating space for citizens to protest within the queer, fun-centered, anarchist Amalgamated Everlasting Union Chorus, and making ceremony outside of mainstream capitalism with an annual mega-collaboration, the Winter Solstice Puppet Show, among other projects. She earns wages and healthcare at a warehouse.
