The True Story of Pocahontas Discussion Group
Countless schoolchildren have heard the tale of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith, and movies and books have long perpetuated the English colonists’ version of the story. Now, for the first time in 400 years, the Native voice rings out, revealing the true account of Pocahontas’s life and tragic events surrounding her capture.
This community discussion is co-sponsored by Asheville Black Lives Matter and the Asheville Friends Meeting (Quaker) Racial Justice Committee. Attendees should read Dr. Linwood "Little Bear" Custalow and Angela L. Daniel Silver Star's The True Story of Pocahontas: The Other Side of History to prepare for participation. Copies of the book are available from our co-op at a discount!
Our discussion will be facilitated by Sharon Smith of Asheville Friends Racial Justice Committee and Asheville Black Lives Matter.
The True Story of Pocahontas is the first public publication of the Powhatan perspective that has been maintained and passed down from generation to generation within the Mattaponi Tribe, and the first written history of Pocahontas by her own people.
