Zelda Fitzgerald Literary Reading
The city of Asheville is proclaiming Thursday, March 10th as Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald Day! To celebrate the life and work of Zelda, we will be hosting a reading of Zelda's work by 98.1 the River's Jordan.
Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was a vibrant and talented writer, painter and dancer. In the 20’s she and her husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald heralded in the birth Jazz age with large parties. Zelda was penned America’s “first flapper”. Over time the marriage deteriorated, F. Scott Fitzgerald having issues with alcohol became more and more overbearing and Sayre who had already been prone to depression had made several suicide attempts.
Sayre was in and out of institutions during the 30’s and 40’s and at that time was diagnosed with schizophrenia. During the last twelve years of her life she lived in Asheville. Sadly, she died in a fire at Highland Hospital (also in Asheville) where she was locked in her room. Today it is speculated, that she may have had Bipolar Disorder.
Jordan moved to the mountains of Asheville in 2010. Her love of music and community resulted in working for the local radio station 98.1 the River. She has been an on-air personality for 98.1 the River for 4 years now, and loves being part of a company that is so involved with the local community.
