Complementarity and Conflict in the Anarchist Movement in Barcelona
Multiple anarchist currents in Spain flowed together to make possible the inspiring social revolution of 1936. But in short order, a number of strategic errors weakened the revolution and enabled the Communists to crush it definitively. This important near success and ultimate failure serves as a model for how different anarchist currents can interact for better and for worse.
After outlining the history of the anarchist movement in Spain, two participants will subjectively trace the relationship between different currents of struggle from 1996 to the present, covering the introduction of insurrectionism, the Juventudes Libertarias, the resurgence of the CNT and anarcha-feminism, and the appearance of general strikes organized from the base, neighborhood assemblies, and the plaza occupation movement.
