Firestorm Orientation

Firestorm Cafe & Books, a four-year old worker cooperative, is undergoing a month of renovations and restructuring. We are seeking reliable, inspired and driven individuals to join us following our October 16th relaunch. New team members will complete a six to nine month paid internship in order to be eligible for co-ownership of our business.

Established in 2008, we seek to provide community space, critical literature and an alternative economic model based on cooperative, libertarian principles (read more on our website). We are seeking folks possessing an entrepreneurial spirit to join us. As a prospective worker-owner of our cooperative you must be interested in acquiring business skills related to the running of a cafe, bookstore or venue. There is no boss or general manager. Instead we work together as a group, making all major decisions using a formalized consensus process.

Applicants should possess good customer service skills and should be interested in joining us for a minimum of at least one year. Experience with baking, bookkeeping, food service and advertising as well as cooperative decision-making is a plus. Please bring your resume! Individuals from historically marginalized backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Compensation is based on a percentage of net sales (plus tips) and is very low. We are currently assessing our capacity to transition into a system based on static wages or salaries.

If you are interested in learning more about Firestorm Cafe & Books and applying for this position, please attend our hour long orientation at 12pm on Sunday, September 30 or 5pm on Thursday, October 4th at 48 Commerce Street (next to the Thirsty Monk). Email us or call (828) 255-8115 for more information.
